A study from Germany found that patients taking Cialis (Tadalafil) had higher rates of erectile dysfunction than those taking placebo. This is due to the greater effect on the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain and the higher blood flow in the penis. The study’s authors suggested that Cialis could offer some hope for men experiencing erectile dysfunction who are not taking nitrates or other drugs used to treat angina.
A double-blind, controlled, placebo-controlled study was conducted at the University Hospital, University of Würzburg. The study included 2,632 men with erectile dysfunction. Participants were randomly assigned to take a Cialis or a placebo for two weeks, during which a small group of men received Cialis in the morning. The average duration of the study was four weeks. After the four-week treatment, erectile function was assessed with the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the International Index ofitement for Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5). The IIEF-5 was defined as the sum of the three domains: erectile function, sexual desire, and overall satisfaction. The IIEF-5 total score was calculated as the sum of the three domains: erectile function, sexual desire, and overall satisfaction. There were no significant differences between groups regarding age, baseline IIEF total score, erectile function domain scores, or the IIEF-5 total score at baseline or after treatment. There was a statistically significant improvement in erectile function and overall satisfaction after Cialis treatment, compared to placebo. There were no significant differences between groups regarding the IIEF-5 total score or the IIEF-5 total score at baseline or after treatment. In the IIEF-5 total score, the study found a statistically significant improvement in erectile function and overall satisfaction after treatment. These findings suggest that Cialis could offer some hope for men experiencing erectile dysfunction who are not taking nitrates or other drugs used to treat angina.
1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
